One of the goals of the Jazz Bridge Project is to share the best of Portland with the city of Khabarovsk.
When I think of visual art that represents Portland’s jazz spirit, I immediately think of Diane Russell’s work.
Diane is an award-winning painter who has become a fixture in Portland’s jazz community through her beautiful oil portraits of some of Portland’s best-loved jazz musicians like Mel Brown, Nancy King, Art Abrams and Thara Memory, as well as other notable music figures.
Diane has generously offered to donate a print of her memorable painting of a night at Jimmy Maks Jazz Club to the Jazz Bridge Project. This painting is so vibrant and joyous, I think it really captures something of what is special about Portland’s jazz scene.
We will present this painting to the Mayor of Khabarovsk as a gift from our city to theirs on our trip this December. You can see this and other paintings of Diane’s here
